Because of how difficult it was to find gem quality pearls in nature,
pearl jewelry were incredibily
expensive in the old days. There were once upon a time where pearls
were only allowed to be worn by royal families. Thanks to the culturing
process, now pearls are widely available for women of every class.
The cultivating process involves a few simple steps. First the
baby oysters were raised on a farm. Once they are big enough, a
small irritant is then implanted, which will slowly be coated by
nacre over time. The oysters are allowed to grow in their natural
habbitat, and periodically treated to prevent infection and disease.
After a few years, the pearls will be ready for harvesting.
Certain pearls, such as the black
Tahitian pearls and the Southsea pearls, are more difficult
to culture. They yield a much smaller percentage, therefore, resulting
in more demand and much higher prices.
